Buy Redbreast Irish Whiskey

Both Irish whiskey and Scotch whisky are grain-based spirits. Many modern Irish whiskeys are lighter or more accessible in style than their Scottish counterparts, thanks to the differences that have developed in distilling techniques.

With a whiskey industry that prospered for hundreds of years, Ireland helped establish a taste for whiskey throughout the western world. Legendary producer Bushmills was issued what is now the oldest license to distill spirits in 1608, and within decades Ireland boasted more than 100 distilleries.

But wars, taxes, regulations, business consolidation and, for a time, U.S. prohibition took their toll. Today, the number of Irish distilleries is down to single digits, though each produces a number of different brands and styles. New worldwide interest in top-shelf spirits has prompted Irish whiskey-makers to explore both new and traditional styles, improve the quality of everyday blended whiskeys, and offer single-malt and small-batch versions for enthusiasts. Increased demand and great quality have inspired producers to open several new distilleries in recent years, and the Irish Whiskey Association estimates more than a dozen new distilleries are in various stages of planning around Ireland.

Our signature bottling, Redbreast 12 boasts the flavour complexity and distinctive qualities of Pot Still whiskey. Matured in a combination of bourbon and sherry casks, the distinctive Redbreast sherry style is a joy to behold in each and every bottle.

It's a beautiful pot still whiskey that means it's only made with whiskey that's come out of a pot still, no inferior spirit has been added to the mix to block it out and it is one of the best whiskies you'll ever come across from anywhere, not just Ireland, but it's a particularly lovely Irish whiskey.

On the nose it has a warmth, it has that lovely sweetness you get with Irish whiskey, but it has a great kind of dried fruit and spice, and lovely woody no tes - almost oily, absolutely gorgeous. Look at the color...(tasting) That's fantastic, absolutely beautiful. Fruity, again, kind of a touch of Christmas cake to it. If you like single malts from Speyside, this would be just down your avenue.

Redbreast is a brand of single pot still Irish Whiskey produced by Irish Distillers. It was originally bottled by Gilbey's, a Dublin spirits merchant using distillate sourced from Jameson's Bow Street Distillery.[1] In the 1980s, the brand was purchased by Irish Distillers, the producer of Jameson. It is the largest selling single pot still Irish whiskey in the world.[2]

By 1903, a whiskey known as John Jameson & Sons Castle "JJ Liqueur" Whiskey 12 Year Old was marketed in a bottle of similar shape and markings to those used for subsequent bottlings of Redbreast.[1] This whiskey was produced using distillate sourced from the Bow Street Distillery in Dublin, the home of Jameson whiskey.[1] Although this whiskey was likely the forerunner of Redbreast, the first official mention of "Redbreast" only dates back to 1912, when Gilbey's referred to the sale of "Redbreast" J.J. Liqueur Whiskey 12 Year Old. "Redbreast" was a nickname given to one of the whiskeys by Gilbey's chairman at the time, who was an avid birdwatcher, in reference to Robin Redbreast.[1]

In 1968, Irish Distillers opted to phase out the supply of bonded whiskey to merchants such as Gilbey's.[4] This threatened the future of the whiskey brand, as Irish Distillers controlled all the whiskey distilleries in operation in Ireland at that point. However, following pleas from Gilbey's, Irish Distillers agreed to continue to supply distillate for the production of Redbreast.[4]

In 1971, Irish Distillers closed all its Dublin distilleries (including Bow Street) and consolidated production at the New Midleton Distillery, a purpose-built facility in County Cork. As a result, production of Redbreast whiskey moved from Dublin to Cork.

Redbreast is one of a handful of single pot still whiskeys in existence today and one of only two to have been produced almost continuously since the early 1900s (the other being Green Spot).[15] Although once the most popular style of whiskey consumed in the world, pot still whiskey fell out of favor in the 20th century, due in part to the rise of cheaper, less intense blended whiskeys.[15] As a result of falling demand, most Irish whiskeys were either reformulated as blends or discontinued.

Single pot still whiskeys, which are historically unique to Ireland, are similar to single malts in that they are produced solely from pot still distillate.[15] However, in contrast to malts which only use malted barley in the mash, single pot still whiskeys are produced from a mixed mash that contains both malted and unmalted barley.[16]

Redbreast has stayed true to the Irish Pot Still whiskey making tradtition for more than a century. It is the biggest selling Irish Single Pot Still Whiskey in the world and part of the Midleton Distillery Collection.

Made from a mash of malted and unmalted barley and then triple distilled in copper pot stills, Redbreast 12 boasts the flavor complexity and distinctive qualities of pot still whiskey. Matured in a combination of bourbon seasoned American oak barrels and oloroso sherry-seasoned Spanish oak butts, the distinctive Redbreast sherry style is a joy to behold in each and every bottle.

At the peak of the Victorian whiskey boom, Mitchells originated the system of labeling casks with a daub of paint that identified the age of the whiskey inside and the names of these iconic whiskeys have survived to today.

Redbreast is a rich, spicy single pot still Irish whiskey matured exclusively in first-fill Sherry and bourbon casks, and this fantastic 21 year old is no exception. A masterpiece of cask selection and blending, we absolutely love this older expression with its notes of tropical fruit, menthol and a touch of leather alongside all that mouth-filling goodness you find right across the range.

On the nose expect fruit, spice and toasted oak. On the palate a wonderfully full-flavoured balance of spice, strong fruits and nuts. The finish is delightfully long and lingering as the flavours continue to develop. We think an absolutely first class whiskey.

One of Planet Whiskies favourite Irish Whiskey must be Redbreast, which is made at the Midleton Distillery in County Cork. We have tried most of the whiskeys in the Redbreast Collection and just love it when a new bottle becomes available.

One of the best ways Redbreast advertise is through the online tasting they have when a new bottle is introduced especially when they introduce a new 'Dreamcask' to their range. Most times Planet Whiskies receives 'tasters' and we take part in this online tasting. They also produced online videos and whiskey tasting notes. So on this page, we have a number of the Redbreast bottles that are available to buy online. We have around 10 below to buy online.

This dram really stands out amongst the line. The tripled distilled pot still juice is matured only in casks from Bodega Lustau in Spain. Their sherried oak brings about a dialed-in depth to the whiskey that really helps elevate the Irish juice.

Originally created by Gilbeys in the 19th Century, Redbreast came into the ownership of Irish Distillers in 1986. It was off the market for a period of approximately 10 years until Irish Distillers reintroduced it in 1991 as a pure pot still whiskey from the Midleton distillery in its distinctive "dumpy" bottle after a complete overall in its quality with a revamping of its wood program to include both sherry and bourbon barrels. In recent years various expressions of the brand have now become available with 12 Year Old Cask, 15 year Old and 21 Year old additions. The 12 year old is one of the greatest value for money Irish Whiskies currently available.

Very elegant, complex, and stylish. Honeyed and silky in texture, with toffee, toasted marshmallow, nougat, maple syrup, banana bread, and a hint of toasted coconut. Bright fruit and golden raisin blend in nicely with the layers of sweetness. Impeccable balance and very approachable. Classic Irish whiskey! *Value Pick* (JH, Winter 2010)

PALATE Warm rich pot still malty goodness followed by notes of fruit, honey, vanilla, spice and citrus with a nutty undertone that ties everything together. I love the flavor of this whiskey almost as much as the aroma.

I just came across your website. I am a neophyte whiskey drinker. Redbreast 12 was the first bottle of whiskey that I have purchased for myself. I loved it. I am not the wordsmith that you are when it comes to describing whiskey, but it looks like you have the same tastes that I do and I am very interested to see what you have to say about other whiskeys. I read your Larceny review and it makes me want to run out and get a bottle RIGHT NOW. Thanks for publishing your thoughts about whiskey. It is most appreciated!

A beautiful pure pot still whiskey (or "single pot still" as it's now officially known). Redbreast 15 is a rich, thick, sweet, pungent whiskey with loads of flavour and complexity - really good stuff! 041b061a72
